Named after Henry Ireton, who, as Oliver Cromwell’s son-in-law, was a general in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War. The night before the Battle of Naseby (June 1645) he surprised Royalist forces and captured many prisoners. He himself was overcome by Prince Rupert’s cavalry during the battle and was unhorsed, wounded and taken prisoner along with other parliamentary soldiers. Cromwell’s forces successfully charged and freed Ireton and other prisoners.
